The latest gardening view from the potting shed window.
The gardening view from the potting shed is definitely beginning to look more spring-like. The highlight of the past few weeks has been the bulb display under the old apple tree.
The show started with snowdrops, moved on to crocus – yellow, purple, lilac and the beautiful striped ‘Pickwick’. Now it’s the turn of the daffodils – Narcissus ‘February Silver’ that this year was perfectly on time.
I’ve been busy getting the vegetable beds ready for the new season. The cloche has been cleared of the overwintered lettuce – they were delicious – and is now warming the soil ready for an early sowing, not sure of what yet.
The cutting bed (nearest) has been weeded and tidied. The tulips are already well up; let’s hope the weather stays kind.
Behind, is what was my first strawberry bed in this garden. The plants date back to some runners given to me more than 25 years ago by a dear friend who had bought them from a market stall in Gloucester.
Strawberries should be renewed and the bed moved every three years and these were well past their best. Last autumn, I potted up some runners and these will start another bed elsewhere. Meanwhile, the original bed has been cleared ready for something else.
The potting shed is beginning to fill up. I’ve washed more small pots and moved them in, gathered more compost and am ready for the sowing to begin.
My Burgon and Ball Hang It Peg Board is also filling up – I had quite a few things to try from the Garden Press Event this week.
And the first plants have moved in! The sweet peas are beginning to make the journey from the greenhouse. This is the first batch. I’ve been pinching them out to make them more bushy and moving them outside during the day to get them used to life outside.
The jobs to do are beginning to mount up. Top of the list this month will be sowing seeds and potting up the dahlia tubers that have spent the winter in the potting shed.
