I’ve sown more seeds than usual this year so space is at a premium in the garden. Add to that a recently added new deck that cries out for plants and the chance to trial Woodlodge bamboo pots has come at the perfect time. (You can read about the deck project here.)

The new range is great for gardeners who are trying to use less plastic but want something that’s a bit more modern in style than terracotta.
Woodlodge bamboo pots are either square or round and come in shades of cream or grey. As well as being made from sustainable material, the pots are also light and, therefore, easy to move around – a distinct advantage when you’re trying to decide on the perfect placing.
I’ve planted one up with Clematis ‘Olympia’ ™ that I was lucky enough to get in a ‘draw’ run by the Garden Media Guild. It’s a new variety that should have been launched at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show by Raymond Evison Clematis, winners of numerous RHS gold medals.
It’s covered in dark purple buds that open to mauve and gradually fade with age. Part of the firm’s Boulevard® (compact patio) range, it grows to around 100-150cm tall, making it perfect for a pot. Growing it in a container means I can also give it soil that’s a bit better than my sandy stuff and keep it away from the resident slugs and snails.
You can plant directly into the Woodlodge bamboo pots, or use them to disguise an ugly plastic pot, as the drainage hole comes with a ‘plug’ that could be left in place. My only criticism is that the single hole doesn’t really provide enough drainage., particularly when using Dalefoot Compost, and I found the clematis was becoming waterlogged. Reducing the watering has solved the problem and drilling more holes would also help, which is something I may do when it’s finished flowering.
It has suited the parsley that I planted into a smaller, round pot, which is thriving. Having it in a container has also allowed me to have it nearer the house – no longer do we have to trek up the garden for parsley.
Woodlodge bamboo pots range in price from £12.99 to £39.99 with sizes starting at 25cm x 17cm for round pots going up to 30cm x 21cm. Square pots range from 23cm x 25cm to 29cm x 30cm
A percentage of each pot sold goes to conservation charity Cool Earth, which works with rainforest communities to stop deforestation. The pots can be bought at garden centres and shops across the country. Find out more on the website.
