Review: 4lite Solar Lanterns

The nights are certainly starting to close in and lighting is becoming essential if you want to sit out of an evening – weather permitting! I’ve been trying out 4lite solar lanterns as a way of lighting up my garden.

I was sent two products to trial – the Antheia Solar Lantern and the new Antheia Solar Portable Lantern. Both are made of diecast aluminium and fully weatherproof, something that’s been important in the recent wet weather. They also come with a four-year warranty.

First impressions are good. The lanterns have a sleek, minimalist appearance that would fit easily into a range of garden styles.

They’re lightweight so easy to carry but still robust and heavy enough to stay standing in windy conditions. The solar lantern (the taller of the two) comes with fixing screws and raw plugs so it can be attached to a heavy base if wanted. It is also activated by motion sensor.

The portable lantern has a neat carrying handle and is small enough to sit on a table yet still gives off enough light to be worthwhile using.

Both of the 4lite solar lanterns are powered by sunlight – always a bonus – although the small lantern can also be charged via a USB port. They also have three light settings from a low level to bright.

My only criticism is the instructions. As so often is the case, these are just a diagram of the parts and the link to the website gives the same diagram. What isn’t clear is that the big lantern works only in the dark and that you have to hold the on/off button down for several seconds before the light will come on. It then goes off when no motion is sensed. The portable lantern has an easy on/off switch and works in both day and night.

Overall, these are a good way of adding light to your garden – there are also lights that can be put into borders – without the need for batteries or wires.
