My gardening view over the past month has all been about the blossom. The cherry tree has been stunning – a white cloud over the garden – and the damson and plum have added to the show.
Warm weather last week means the crab apple is beginning to open and it won’t be long before the apple trees are also in flower.
The vegetable beds have been weeded and given a top dressing of homemade compost ready for the new season. The first beetroot (grown in plugs) has gone out and I’ve sown carrots. The rhubarb is growing inches every day and the first harvest will be soon.
In the potting shed, the big news is the arrival of a seat – perfect for long hours of seed-sowing and pricking out.
Just the right height and with a back to stop backache, it was a bargain on Ebay and perfect for enjoying my gardening view.
Space in the greenhouse is always in short supply in spring and I’ve been moving plants out to make room for more seedtrays. Pricked out cabbage and lettuce – these are ‘Outredgeous’ from Suttons, part of my 2019 Gardening Trials – have now joined the sweet peas in the potting shed.
My dad’s old ‘garden tidy tray’ is being used as storage. It’s ideal as you can fill it with water so that the plants are watered from the bottom.
I was given some lupin plug plants as part of an order with J Parkers and these are also sitting out the cold weather in the potting shed. Lupins aren’t something I usually grow – too tasty for my mollusc foes – so it will be interesting to see how these fare.
In fact, the shed is becoming so full, my pots have been moved onto the floor to make way for more seedlings on the shelves.
And there are the first signs of life among the dahlias!
