There seems to be a new flower opening daily now – a sure sign that spring is on the way. This week’s cheerful bloom isn’t performing as I expected though.

Most of my hellebores have flowers that hang down (it helps protect them from winter weather) with one or two more forward-looking. This flower has decided to gaze to the sky though unlike the rest on the plant that are resolutely looking at the earth. Very odd but it does mean I could see the beautiful detail of the flower.

I am sure I read somewhere that some new hellebores have been bred to be more upright. It’s a shame we struggle to see their faces, same applies to snowdrops.
Yes, there are breeders trying to do that. It’s not always great for the plants though as they’ve evolved to hang down to protect the pollen etc from rain.
