Six on Saturday – Sept 7 2019

Something a little different for this week’s post. A lot of the garden bloggers take part in Six on Saturday, hosted by The Propagator. The idea is to pick out six things from your garden that week. So, here are my choices.

1. Dahlias

Dahlia ‘Dwarf Cactus’.

It really is dahlia time in my garden. They’re part of my cutting garden (in reality a few beds in the veg garden) and are so successful this year, I keep running out of vases. I’m particularly pleased with these dahlias as I grew them from seed last year and managed to overwinter the tubers successfully. This is just one of the colours – they include white, pink and purple.

2. Sweet Peas

It’s been a really good year for sweet peas, after a slow start. Can’t quite believe I’m still picking at the beginning of September.

3. Raspberries

The raspberries have also done well and we’re picking masses. These are a rather good yellow variety that I ‘inherited’ from my neighbour when it crept under the fence. She has no idea which variety it is but we both rather like it. It fruits for a long season – overlapping with both my summer and autumn red raspberries – and has a good flavour.

4. Tomatoes

I grow a lot of tomatoes and this season has been no different: 14 different varieties. A lot are varieties I’ve been sent to trial with one or two favourites added to the mix. They were slow to start this year but are making up for it now.

5. ‘Dublin Bay’

Rosa 'Dublin Bay' as part of Six on Saturday

I don’t usually grow a rose that has no scent. It seems a little pointless. However, I made an exception for ‘Dublin Bay’ because it had just the right shade of red. I’ve got it growing with a golden hop (Humulus lupulus ‘Aureus’) and a purple vine (Vitis vinifera ‘Purpurea’).

6. Cyclamen

The last of my Six on Saturday choices. There’s a real sense of autumn approaching in the garden with leaves beginning to change colour and the first of the Cyclamen hederifolium in flower.

  1. The rose does look lovely against the hop. Funnily enough I have a similar arrangement on my shady fence. A dwarf hop and r. Danse de feu make the contrast.

Jealous of your raspberries and your tomatoes. My tomatoes have yet to ripen and the raspberries have been a right flop this year. Dunno why…

    1. The raspberries get little help from me – beyond weeding and cutting down the ‘Autumn Bliss’. The tomatoes have been slow to get going this year.

    1. Only a few of the tomatoes – I do grow rather a lot 😁 The raspberries have been particularly good this year. A crop that really earns its keep.
